Our incredible speaker & volunteer Nadia has built & donated a beautiful garden bed to EDQ. We look forward to incorporating these edible fruits and flowers into our groups & therapeutic services.
Story of the Garden:
“During recovery I joined my local community garden. I found it really helpful to spend time in the garden, watching the veggies and fruits growing, touching them, smelling them and eating them straight from the garden. Making connections between nature and food, feeling safe eating food from the garden, helped me extend that to other foods that I found more challenging to eat. Being in the garden was also a wonderful grounding experience using all my senses.
I wanted to build a sensory garden for the EDQ community and it’s been 12 months in the making, from concept and design to sourcing materials from Reverse Garbage and curbside collections, and feeling literally empowered using my power tools to assemble the frame. I also grew most of the plants from seed, or from cuttings from my own garden.
I hope the garden bed can be a useful addition at EDQ and can be incorporated into groups or therapy experiences. In the garden bed we have:
- snow peas, rosemary, basil, mint, strawberries, marigolds and cherry tomatoes.
- Everything is edible or produces edible fruit or flowers, and many of them have scent or texture that can invite interaction with the garden.”
