MEDICARE

Medicare rebates are available for all clients with a valid GP referral.

The rebate amount is dependent on both the referral type, and the treating practitioner.

  • To access Medicare rebated individual counselling sessions, a GP referral will be required. When connecting with EDQ, let us know that you would like to use your GP referral. We will need a copy of the referral paperwork for our records.
  • Up to 40 counselling sessions, or up to 20 dietetics sessions, may be accessed through Medicare, depending on the type of referral. EDQ requires payment in full at each appointment and will then process your claim to Medicare so that you can receive a rebate
  • Please note that any requested additional support letters, reporting, etc., will be charged in line with the practitioner’s hourly rate.
  • Clients can participate in our therapeutic groups while accessing individual counselling
  • You can access Medicare sessions before or after accessing Queensland Health-funded sessions. There may be a waitlist while moving between funding options – ensure you check in with EDQ staff for an estimate of the waiting time.

Dietitians often play a significant role in the treatment of eating disorders.

Dietitians are also able to identify or flag concerns for medical admissions for eating disorders. ED-informed dietitians can continue to monitor for signs or symptoms for concerns from a medical perspective or to ensure medical stability.

Dietitians can:

  • Translate scientific information into practical advice surrounding food and healthy eating.
  • Teach people with eating disorders how to eat and how to buy appropriate foods (e.g. in a supermarket)
  • Provide individualised nutrition therapy taking into consideration existing medical conditions.
  • Help people in recovery develop a healthy relationship with food and eating patterns.

Dietitians work with patients to address physical concerns related to inadequate nutrition covering:

  • Gastrointestinal concerns, menstrual dysfunction, poor concentration, dizziness and cardiovascular concerns.
  • Advise patients on individualised strategies to achieve adequate nutrition
  • Support clients in developing a healthy relationship with food and overcome food fears
  • Support clients to establish lifelong eating patterns for recovery and general wellbeing

RAVES

An acronym which describes eating principles seen as being integral to development and maintenance of a positive relationship with food.

RAVES guide sticker

The goal of the RAVES model (developed by dietitian Shane Jeffrey) is to bring eating back to basics, without dietary rules, and to support overall health and wellbeing.  The downloadable information on RAVES gives an excellent overview of the aim of dietary intervention for eating disorders.

Dietitian appointments are $150 per session, with rebates available from Medicare for those with a current referral. The rebate does not cover the full cost of the appointment. For information on how to book in with the dietitian, see engaging with EDQ services. Appointment frequency will be determined with your dietitian and varies depending on your stage of recovery etc.
